Algarve to welcome inaugural F1 training session |
Portugal has moved a step closer to becoming a major F1 testing venue after McLaren and Honda confirmed that they will be attending a new track near the Algarve.
Currently, the teams competing in the world's most popular motor sport carry out regular test laps at a number of venues across Europe, including at tracks in Jerez and Barcelona in Spain.
Now it has been confirmed that Portugal will join its Iberian neighbour as a testing destination, with the Algarve venue set to attract the biggest names in the sport thanks to its variable circuit layout capability and the fact that it boasts a cutting-edge sprinkler system that can mimic some of the more challenging weather conditions likely to be faced by drivers.
Alongside the testing session, which is set to take place for three days from December 15th, the Algarve Motor Park will also include a technology park, a sports complex and numerous hotels and villas in the Algarve.
Despite this, this region of Portugal's southern coast is likely to remain better associated with golf for some time yet, with DJ Chris Evans among the many celebrities choosing to rent a villa in the Algarve in order to be near its stunning fairways.
