Algarve waters given thorough clean-up |
Brits looking forward to a dip in the sea during their Algarve villa holidays will be happy to hear of a recent operation to clean up the waters around Albufeira.
The beach cleaning session was organised by British expatriate and diving instructor Jo Onslow and her colleague Claudia Soares, reports the Portugal Resident.
More than a dozen volunteer divers, 12 boy scouts and 20 helpers from the fishing association were involved in the operation.
The material collected during their dive along the coastline in Albufeira, one of the Algarve's top resorts, included more than 150kg of used fishing nets, 28 fishing traps, 20 metres of rope, 107 plastic bottles and an umbrella.
Ms Soares said: "Jo and I have been involved in these beach cleaning operations for several years, but this is the third year that we have organised it as a diving school.
"All the rubbish we collected during the dive and beach cleaning was all removed properly because Albufeira Camara made a truck and crane available for us to dispose of it."
Holidaymakers staying in Algarve villas can visit a number of beaches in Albufeira, including Praia da Gale and Praia da Oura, as well as sites of historical interest such as Paderne Castle.
