Alicante starts summer with a bang |
The popular Spanish holiday province of Alicante will be greeting summer with characteristic enthusiasm this year at the Bonfires of San Juan festival.
This event has a historical significance, as the people of Alicante have traditionally visited the countryside on June 23rd for a festive dinner, midnight bonfires, dancing and celebration.
In 1928, the custom was officially recognised as an annual festival and has turned into a major cause of celebration in Alicante.
Holidaymakers staying in Costa Blanca villas this year can visit Alicante on June 20th to see the festivities get underway, when cardboard figures take to the streets and large tents offer food and entertainment.
Among the culinary delights on offer are figs and 'cocas', which are a type of pastry with tuna, onions and pine nuts.
Events continue until June 24th and are mostly themed around fireworks and bonfires.
The festival is brought to a close with a fireworks competition, which will be held on El Postiguet beach between June 25th and 29th, and a medieval market that is held in the historic centre of Alicante.
