Brits 'determined to take summer holidays' |
The majority of British holidaymakers still plan to go away this summer despite the range of financial challenges they are facing, according to research.
Online travel community TripAdvisor polled more than 4,000 people worldwide and found that, despite rising fuel costs and poor exchange rates, Brits are less likely than any other nationality to cut back on their annual holiday.
Only one in five British travellers said fuel prices will affect their plans for villa holidays and other trips this summer, compared to nearly half (41 per cent) of respondents worldwide.
Nearly two thirds (62 per cent) of people from the UK said they plan to take half or more of their annual holiday entitlement this summer, while a fifth said they plan to use all of it.
People on villa holidays in France and Rome this summer look set to take advantage of the haute cuisine on offer, with half of the average British traveller's holiday budget set to be spent in restaurants.
The survey also found that 12 per cent of spending will go on tours, five per cent will be allocated to new clothes and only two per cent will fund souvenir purchases.
Ian Rumgay, TripAdvisor's European communications manager, said: "A summer holiday is a must-have for the British public.
"It may be a last hurrah but it seems that we are determined to have a good time this summer, no matter what the cost."
