Catalonia 'Spain's most popular region' |
The number of people staying in Costa Brava villas last year contributed to Catalonia being the most popular region in Spain for foreign visitors, according to government figures.
Statistics gathered for the Frontier Tourist Movement Survey found that some 15.2 million people visited the Catalonian region in 2007.
This is more than a quarter of Spain's total tourist audience, with some 59.2 million people visiting the country last year, compared to 58.2 million in 2006.
Catalonia is an autonomous community in north-eastern Spain, comprising the provinces of Barcelona, Girona, Lleida and Tarragona, and is popular among many visitors owing to the Costa Brava.
This stretch of coastline extends from Blanes, 60km north-east of Barcelona, to the French border, encompassing seaside resorts such as Tossa de Mar and Lloret de Mar.
People staying in Costa Brava villas can visit locations such as the small, picturesque towns of Cadaques, Begur or Tamariu, or attractions including the Mediterranean Museum in Torroella de Montgri.
