Cyprus 'could become a unified island' |
Holidaymakers who enjoy staying in villas in Cyprus could soon have a new range of holiday opportunities available to them as talks are set to take place to unify the island.
The Mediterranean isle has been informally divided into the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and a Greek southern region since 1974.
This could soon change, however, with the new president of Cyprus, Demetris Christofias, set to meet with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat this month, reports the BBC.
When Mr Christofias was elected last month, Mr Talat congratulated him and said: "I believe that it won't be a surprise if we solve the problem by the end of 2008."
The southern region of the country is currently the most popular area for people staying in villas in Cyprus and other holidaymakers, with destinations such as Paphos, Lemesos and Larnaca among the most successful hotspots.
If the talks go well, however, it could soon become much easier for visitors to explore northern locations such as Famagusta, which boasts spectacular ruins including an amphitheatre, Roman baths and royal tombs.
