Cyprus could get new animal park |
Limassol Zoo in Cyprus could be developed into a larger zoological park that is more suitable to house the animals currently living at the zoo.
The island's government has announced plans to commission a study for the viability of creating a new animal park in Limassol, the Cyprus Mail reports.
An expert will be called in to consult on the logistical elements of creating a new park, which could eventually lead to more space and improved living conditions for the zoo's animals.
Dr Lambros Lambrou, a vet at Limassol Zoo, said: "A number of experts have expressed interest in the project and the right candidate will be selected soon."
He added: "The chosen candidate will undertake a study on the placement of the national zoological park, the type of animals that will be hosted there and the costs of creating and maintaining such a park."
People staying in villas in Cyprus can visit a natural history museum that is part of Limassol Zoo in its current form, as well as an education centre that often hosts nature and wildlife events.
Limassol, which is located on the southern coast of Cyprus, is the island's second largest city and boasts tourist attractions including the nearby ancient towns of Kourion and Amathus and the Kolossi Castle.
