Cyprus eyes development in winter industry |
People looking at villas in Cyprus for their future holidays could have more options available to them in off-peak periods as a result of new promotional efforts.
Speaking at a business seminar in Larnaca, Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) chairman Panos Englezos announced a 7 million (£5.6 million) investment package to revive winter tourism.
The Mediterranean island's winter travel industry has been on a downward trend since 2001, the Cyprus Mail reports.
Phoebe Katsouris, director general of the CTO, described the 2007-08 winter season as the worst the organisation has ever seen.
Mr Englezos was positive for the future, however, revealing plans to make Cyprus a year-round tourist destination rather than merely a summer hotspot, and predicting that the resurgence will begin this year.
"We will have an enviable winter season," he said. "Our plan includes increased advertising in all of our markets. We have also increased our collaboration with tour operators, travel agents and airlines."
People interested in taking villa holidays during Cyprus' winter season should visit the island between October and March.
