Cyprus settlement 'would be win-win for tourism' |
A settlement between the Turkish and Greek halves of Cyprus would lead to a 'win-win situation' for the tourism industry, according to new research.
Some 98 per cent of Turkish Cypriots said that a reconciliation would have a universally positive effect on tourism, a survey revealed, while 79 per cent of Greek Cypriots expressed the same belief, the Cyprus Mail reports.
The poll, which was carried out by a joint team of Greek and Turkish academics and presented at Frederick University, also found that the majority of Cyprus residents thought a continuation of the current arrangement would have a negative impact on both communities.
Demetris Christofias, the new president of Cyprus, has recently stressed the importance of the peace talks between the two halves of the island.
He said that plans to unite the country, which could lead to a range of new holiday opportunities for people staying in villas in Cyprus, "must succeed".
"On our part, we are already willing to work hard to reach... a fair, viable and workable solution soon," he added.
