Cyprus visitor numbers climb this year |
The number of people taking villa holidays in Cyprus and other types of trips to the island increased in the first two months of the year, according to new figures.
Data released by the island's statistics department showed that the number of visitors to Cyprus was 5.1 per cent higher in January and February this year than in the same period of 2007.
In total, tourist arrivals on the island reached 70,140 in the opening months of 2008, the Cyprus Mail reports.
This number is set to climb steadily over the coming months following the official opening of Cyprus' summer tourism timetable on March 15th.
The summer season started two weeks earlier than in 2007 this year owing to the fact that Easter falls on March 23rd, which is expected to bring a boost in tourist movement.
On May 25th this year Cyprus will host Anthesteria, an annual festival to celebrate spring and the rebirth of nature.
This event will be held at various locations around the island, including Paphos, Larnaca and Limassol.
