European cities 'rising in popularity'
Top European city break destinations such as Rome and Nice are proving increasingly popular among travellers, according to new figures

Data from European Cities Marketing, which represents over 100 cities, tourist boards and bureaus across the continent, showed that Europe's premier cities generated €540 million (£426.5 million) from tourism in 2006.

This is an increase of €19.2 million on the previous year, indicating the upward trend that the market is on.

According to ECM, the rise in frequency of low-cost flights is an important element of the industry, with locations that are close to budget airline bases performing well.

People considering villa holidays and other trips to Rome can catch flights with low-cost airlines such as easyJet and Ryanair to Ciampino airport.

Mark Walsh of Reed Travel Exhibitions, which will host the City Break show in Serbia this year, said: "City tourism nowadays accounts for almost 40 per cent of the total European outbound trip volumes.

"Based on these facts approximately 20 per cent of international tourism receipts are generated in European cities. This all underpins the buoyant market of this rapidly expanding industry."
