People on villa holidays in France will have the opportunity to experience one of the country's grandest sporting traditions in July.

The 2009 Tour de France will begin with an individual time-trial in Monaco on July 4th before a race that will see the riders head from Monaco to Brignoles in Provence on July 5th.

Travellers staying in holiday villas in Provence will then be able to see sections of the race stretching from Marseille to Perpignan between July 6th and 8th before the competitors head across the border for two stages in Spain.

The Tour will return to France to pass through destinations including Limoges, Colmar and Besancon before eventually coming to an end on Paris' Champs Elysees on July 26th.

People on villa holidays in France who see some of the stages of the 2009 Tour de France will experience an event with a history dating back more than 100 years.

One of the most successful riders in the history of the Tour is the American Lance Armstrong, who won the race seven years in a row between 1999 and 2005.
