Google Earth explores ancient Rome
Brits planning villa holidays in Rome can now prepare for their trip by learning about the famous city's heritage through an application launched by internet giant Google.

The company's Google Earth program now offers views of ancient Rome in 3D, enabling users to view a virtual representation of the city as it appeared in the year 320AD.

People planning villa holidays in Rome, or past visitors who want to expand their knowledge, can fly around the city using the application, viewing thousands of buildings and exploring the interiors of ancient structures such as the Colosseum.

Users can also visit the famous Roman Forum, trace the footsteps of gladiators in the Ludus Magnus or pass under the Arch of Constantine.

Gianni Alemanno, mayor of Rome, said: "Our spectacular ancient remains continue to fascinate people all around the world, drawing millions of tourists to our city every year.

"We're delighted even more people all over the world can now enjoy the heritage of our great city. It's an incredible opportunity to share the stunning greatness of ancient Rome."

People eager to see ancient Rome in 3D should click on the 'layers' panel of Google Earth, then select 'gallery' and click on 'ancient Rome 3D'.
