'Green' holidays rising in profile |
The travel industry is becoming increasingly able to cater for people who want their villa holidays in Tuscany and other trips to be environmentally friendly, an expert has claimed.
Frances Tuke, a spokeswoman for the Association of British Travel Agents, said that green tourism is no longer a niche sector within the industry.
Holiday companies and tour operators have pursued initiatives to ensure that more eco-friendly options are available to consumers, she claimed.
"In order for the industry to make any difference it has led itself and made its own inroads," Ms Tuke said.
"It really has started to take off very quickly and a couple of years ago was a real tipping point. It went from being a niche idea to being a mainstream one."
Many people interested in environmentally friendly travel visit places that are known for their natural beauty and landscapes, such as the province of Tuscany on the western coast of Italy and Provence in south-eastern France.
According to research carried out by TripAdvisor last year, 34 per cent of people would pay more to stay in eco-friendly accommodation and 38 per cent would pay more for green flights.
