Holiday hotspots prove popular from Birmingham |
Villa holidays in a number of hotspots around Europe contributed to a boom in passenger numbers from Birmingham international airport in February.
The Midlands hub released figures showing that it handled 635,052 passengers in February, including 527,799 people on scheduled services and 107,253 charter travellers.
This figure smashes Birmingham's previous record for February and represents a 9.2 per cent increase on the passenger numbers recorded in the second month of 2007.
The popularity of villa holidays in Spain was among the contributing factors to the positive figures from Birmingham in February, with a 229 per cent increase in people flying to and from Murcia.
Palma de Mallorca (63 per cent) also saw a large increase in passengers from Birmingham, while the Algarve hotspot of Faro (127 per cent) was as popular as ever.
Joe Kelly, acting managing director of Birmingham airport, described the figures as "great news" and welcomed the effect of recent route launches from airlines including bmibaby.
