Holidaymakers urged to visit Spain out of season
People planning villa holidays in Spain have been urged to see what the country has to offer outside of the peak summer season.

According to Simon Calder, a travel writer for the Independent, Spain is "a country at its best out of summer".

He acknowledged that winter trips to Spain are already popular among Brits, with millions of people visiting destinations in the Canary islands or on the coast to escape the cold weather, but said there is still much more to explore.

One of the main benefits of visiting at off-peak times is the lack of congestion, with Mr Calder saying that the air becomes "as clear as the beaches" and cities open up for leisurely exploration.

Spain provides more than just sun, sea and sand, according to the travel writer, with mountain areas providing plenty of opportunities for winter sports.

In the north of the country, on the border with France, are the Pyrenees, while in the south people staying in Costa del Sol villas can explore the Sierra Nevada.
