Italy wins 'best European country' award |
People taking villa holidays in Italy this summer will have the experience of visiting the number one holiday country in Europe, according to a new survey.
The Italian state tourist board claimed that the country was the "runaway winner" of the best European country accolade in the Sunday Times Travel Magazine readers' awards.
A statement from the tourist board said it was "particularly proud" to take first place in the awards.
It added: "This encourages us to work even harder to improve Italy's image abroad."
Summarising the feedback from its readers, the Sunday Times Travel Magazine said three in ten voters "swear by Italy", with its cuisine regularly one of the most praised aspects of the country.
"Almost everybody cites the pasta, the pizza, the gelato, the Chianti: we gave up counting at the 200th mention of the nosh," the magazine said.
"You like the people, too - their passion, their fashion and their warm, genuine, cheek-pinching family-friendliness."
Other destinations that are popular for villa holidays made it into the Sunday Times top five, including France in third place and Spain in fourth position.
