Luxury travellers want 'dinner party fodder' |
People on luxury villa holidays and other such memorable trips are looking for unique and authentic experiences, or 'dinner party fodder', that they can share with their friends when they return home, it has been claimed.
Alyson Cook, editor of Luxury Travel magazine, said that people who pay for trips at the higher end of the market expect something more than what is on offer on traditional holidays.
Ms Cook claimed that the typical individual on a luxury holiday wants more than "just sea and sand".
"What they do expect is more of an experience," she said.
"They want something tangible to show from their holiday once they come back - it's what we call 'dinner party fodder' [so] they can boast to their friends that they have had an experience that no one else has had."
Ms Cook claimed that the emphasis at the luxury end of the travel market is now "very much on authentic experience".
According to research carried out by the International Luxury Travel Market in 2007, luxury villa holidays and other such trips now represent around 25 million annual arrivals, accounting for a quarter of international tourism spending.
