Mass summer getaway expected this weekend |
More than two million Brits are expected to depart from British shores on villa holidays and other trips around the world this weekend, according to the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta).
With the majority of schools breaking up today (July 18th), the coming three-day period is expected to be one of the busiest getaway weekends of the year.
Holiday villas on the Costa del Sol, Mallorca and other such hotspots are set to be popular, with Abta revealing that Spain has retained its status as Brits' favourite destination despite the current strength of the euro.
France has also experienced growth in bookings, along with Malta and the Caribbean.
Mark Tanzer, chief executive of Abta, said that the economic climate has made many existing trends, such as the popularity of Spain, "more pronounced".
Heathrow is set to be the busiest airport this weekend, with 460,000 departing passengers, followed by Gatwick (260,000) and Manchester (160,000).
