Fans of motorsport who are planning villa holidays in the Algarve next year may get the chance to attend a major new event in the region.
The FIA World Motor Sport Council announced the 2009 calendar for the FIA GT Championship, which will include an event in the Algarve on September 13th.
Taking place over a total of nine rounds in different countries around the world, the championship features race versions of production cars that take part in endurance races covering a minimum of 500km.
A number of prestigious brands are involved in the competition, including Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Porsche and Maserati.
People on villa holidays in the Algarve who make it to next year's race will witness the first ever GT Championship event to be staged in the region.
Stephane Ratel, chairman of SRO, the company that promotes the competition, said that the organisation was "delighted" to announce the new track in Portugal, which "promises to be spectacular".
Other race locations in the 2009 season include Adria in Italy and Spa in Belgium.
