New ferry service in the Algarve |
Holidaymakers enjoying long villa holidays in the Algarve this summer will have the chance to take advantage of a new ferry crossing that launched recently.
The first ferry to cross between the Algarve, Madeira and the Canary Islands set off from Portimao on June 15th.
It is regarded as a historically significant crossing as it represents the first time a maritime passenger link has been established between these three tourist hotspots.
The route is also hoped to promote the Algarve destination of Portimao as an important tourism hub and a port of call for ferries travelling through Europe.
Visitors to the Algarve will be able to access the route from July and September for a minimum of two years.
The ferry operating the crossing provides 56 cabins and has total capacity for around 1,000 passengers and 600 cars.
People on villa holidays in the Algarve can catch the ferry from Portimao every Sunday, with the ship arriving at the Madeira port of Funchal on Mondays and Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the Canary Islands on Tuesdays.
