New proposals for Cyprus tourism industry |
Holidaymakers booking villas in Cyprus may be interested to know of a new package of proposals which are aimed at supporting the hotel and tourist industry in the country.
The proposals have been presented to the island's finance minister by the leaders of the Cyprus Hoteliers Association and include ideas which are hoped will bring more tourists to Cyprus.
Among the proposals include the possibility of reducing airport fees and rates, upgrading hotels that are more than 20 years old and temporarily lowering VAT to five per cent from eight per cent.
A deadline of November 10th has been set by the association chairman Haris Loizides for the proposals to be approved, as London's annual Tourist Expo is set to take place shortly afterwards.
Meanwhile, finance minister Charilaos Stavrakis has stated the government will make "every effort" to support Cyprus' hotel and tourist industry, especially as fears of a global recession loom.
Tourism accounts for 13 per cent of Cyprus' gross domestic product.
