New shopping centre planned for Costa del Sol
People staying in Costa del Sol villas will soon be able to visit a brand-new shopping centre after a development was given the green light.

Peel Holdings, the property and investment company that owns Manchester's Trafford Centre, is behind the £500 million scheme.

The group has been planning the development and engaging in negotiations with the Spanish authorities for years, the Manchester Evening News reports.

Now the go-ahead has been given, work can begin on an 80-acre site in the holiday location of Torremolinos.

Construction is expected to get underway in early 2009 and take around two years.

Development leader Lindsey Ashworth said that the centre will have a universal appeal and not only be aimed at British holidaymakers and expatriates.

He added: "While there will obviously be a flavour of the original Trafford Centre, the major difference is, because it's in a warm climate, it can be outward-facing.

"Bars and restaurants will have terracing and some will be built around a lake."
