Ocean race sets off from Algarve |
Holidaymakers taking breaks in Algarve villas and other onlookers enjoyed perfect conditions for the recent launch of the Portimao Global Ocean Race, according to reports.
Portimao marina was full of eager onlookers and the friends and family of the sailors who were setting off on a 30,000-mile journey around the world.
The race got underway at 2pm on October 12th when Luis Carito, the deputy mayor of Portimao, fired the starting gun, the Portugal Resident reports.
One of the men setting off from the port was Nico Budel, a Dutchman who, at the age of 69, is fulfilling a lifelong dream to sail around the world.
Each boat in the race has to pass through a number of gates, the first of which was situated one mile south of Cape St Vincent, where the sailors were joined by dolphins that swam alongside the vessels.
People staying in Algarve villas will have the opportunity to see the end of the race next year when the sailors complete the final leg of their journey from Charleston in North America to Portimao.
