Orihuela celebrates liberation |
People staying in Costa Blanca villas in July will be able to visit the town of Orihuela as it holds a highly significant celebration.
Every year the town, which is located in the province of Alicante, commemorates the arrival of Christian troops in the 13th century and their victory over the Saracens.
The festival, which takes place from July 13th to 19th this year, is characterised by colourful parades of people in costume, which stream through the town and fill it with colour and spectacle.
July 17th provides the highlight to the event, when the procession dedicated to the town's patron saints takes place, crowned by the flag that represents Orihuela.
The night before this significant occasion, flaming torches are lit in the ruins of the local castle.
Holidaymakers staying in Costa Blanca villas will be able to enjoy another celebration in Alicante from June 20th, when the Fires of San Juan festival takes place to mark the beginning of summer.
