Over-55s 'want adventure, excitement' |
Travellers over the age of 55 are increasingly looking for exciting and adventurous experiences during their villa holidays and other trips around the world, it has been claimed.
Sean Tipton, press officer at the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta), said that one of the reasons for this trend is the better health that the older members of the population are enjoying.
"It's a cliche that 60 is the new 40 and 70 is the new 50, but the reason behind that is that we are probably a lot healthier than we've ever been," he said.
The Abta spokesman also claimed that the amount of time for which older people have been taking holidays means they are now looking for new experiences.
"We've been taking foreign holidays as a nation en masse for about 40 years now, so if you're talking about people over 55 then they've been abroad a great many times and a lot of them are quite bored just sitting on a beach," Mr Tipton said.
People taking villa holidays in Provence can take part in a number of activities and pastimes, including horse riding and mountain biking, while Brittany boasts a number of hiking routes.
