Regional bases 'will continue to thrive'
People planning villa holidays who do not live in close proximity to London will be increasingly able to embark on their trips from regional airports in the coming years, an industry spokesman has claimed.

According to Tony Hallwood, commercial and aviation development director of Leeds Bradford international airport (LBIA), regional hubs are beginning to present strong competition to the traditionally dominant London bases of Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted.

Regional airports have undergone substantial growth recently, with LBIA achieving a 75 per cent increase in passenger traffic over the last four years.

Mr Hallwood said he had no doubt that this expansion would continue over the coming years.

"There is not a shadow of a doubt that regional airports in the UK are going to gain in…popularity," he said.

"As [regional] airports introduce more destinations and more choice with a wider number of scheduled airlines, there is now less need for people to trawl down to London to connect to flights worldwide."

People setting off on villa holidays can access a number of popular destinations from LBIA, including Avignon and Nice in the Provence region of France, the Tuscan city of Pisa in Italy and the Cyprus hotspots of Larnaca and Paphos.
