Tourism chief promotes Algarve golfing holidays |
Golfing holidays are becoming increasingly popular in the Algarve, with tourism officials in the area expecting even more sports enthusiasts to head to the region.
Portugal's secretary of state for tourism Bernardo Trindade has this week been visiting tour operators in France and Spain to try to further boost the number of Algarve visitors.
According to The Euro Weekly, the politician will also be meeting operators in London next week to discuss the growing popularity of golf in the Algarve.
The publication states that tourism experts believe the rise in the number of golf courses in the Algarve is a major factor in its boom in visitor numbers.
They also believe, the newspaper states, that it is because of a number of high profile golfing events being staged in the region.
These include the European Seniors Champions Cup, the Nations Cup and the Portugal Masters, which attracted 24,000 spectators and millions of TV viewers.
Villas in the Algarve are often located a short distance from a golf course to allow holidaymakers to enjoy a round in the morning before cooling off in the pool in the afternoon.
