Travellers urged not to cut back on insurance |
Brits planning villa holidays and other trips to foreign countries have been urged not to cut back on travel insurance as a way of reducing spending.
Research carried out by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) this year found that two thirds of Britons are planning to spend less on holidays, prompting concerns that travel insurance could be one of the targets of the cutbacks.
Figures released by the FCO this week showed the importance of insurance, with 8,304 Brits who visited the US between April 2006 and March 2007 requiring some sort of assistance and 6,710 losing their passports in Spain in the same period.
Foreign Office minister Meg Munn said: "This report highlights what can go wrong on holiday.
"It is a reminder to all that taking out comprehensive travel insurance is a crucial part of your holiday planning and not something that should be sacrificed in order to save a few pounds."
According to the FCO, one of the best ways that people taking villa holidays and other trips can ensure they have a problem-free break is to carry out some research into local laws, customs and health requirements before leaving.
