Tuscany top for wine enthusiasts |
Italy's roaming hills and luscious summer weather makes it a perfect place to explore some of the best wines available.
For wine enthusiasts looking to sample some of the region's offerings, the best-known Tuscan wine is Chianti, made mostly from Sangiovese grapes and which ranges from a light sipping wine to a full-bodied Riserva for dinner.
The Chianti region sits between Florence and Siena, two areas with equal importance for wine lovers.
For those with a car, driving through the Via Chiantigiana, which follows highway S222, is a great way to explore the other areas and see how the elevation varies as well as the flavour of the wine.
Montepulciano is home to another rich red called Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which is made mostly from a blend of Sangiovese and other grapes and only ages for one year.
One of 20 regions of Italy, Tuscany's regional capital is Florence along with six localities that are UNESCO protected sites. These include the historical centre of Florence, the historical centre of Siena, the square of the Cathedral of Pisa, the historical centre of San Gimignano, the centre of Pienza and the Val d'Orcia.
