Two million to flee the UK this weekend |
The August bank holiday weekend is set to see two million British people jetting off on villa holidays and other trips abroad, according to new figures.
Friday and Saturday (August 22nd and 23rd) are set to be the busiest days, as almost one million people fly from the south-east alone to escape the wettest August in years.
Heathrow will be the busiest airport of all, with more than 420,000 leaving from the London hub, followed by Gatwick (260,000) and Stansted (160,000).
Manchester, Birmingham and Nottingham East Midlands airports will be among the leading regional gateways, while some 85,000 will use the Eurostar to reach the continent.
A number of destinations that are popular for villa holidays are set to be as busy as ever this weekend, including the Balearic islands, mainland Spain, Cyprus and Portugal.
Abta president Justin Fleming said: "The August bank holiday is our traditional goodbye to the summer and is always very busy. This year is no exception with large numbers escaping to guaranteed sunshine, sandy beaches and warm seas."
